I finally got caught up! I read the whole thing, it's all brilliant, I love the characters that you've painted. I think you've all stayed pretty true to Rowling's voice.

I'm interested in seeing how Allan deals with Snape.

Snape still a teacher this could be fun. Snape passed over on the DADA teacher after 20 years. Or was there a time he was the teacher , but went back to teaching potions?

OK, question: who are Carson Bones' parents? I'm assuming that he can't be Susan's son, because he'd have her husband's last name. All of her uncle Edgar's kids were killed by Voldemort along with him...

Any thoughts?

Good question -I never thought of that. He could be no relation, or if we want him to be one, we could say she died and her husband decided to change Carson's last name or something. huh.gif

Or he could just be a son of Susan's brother... She could have a brother, you never know!

It is an old traditional in Britain to adopt names according to social status... dates back to feudal times... especially if they are hyphenated with both the laird's and the lower-status person's.

[Remember your comment about feminism, Agrippa? Well....
Once upon a time...
Specifically 1975 in Ohio, my husband and I wanted to give our son both of our surnames (I am one of those upity females who didn't "take" his name when we married)... we did quite a bit of thinking as to order, I thought his should go first so that when bureaucratic types tried to chop it in half and alphabetize the kid into the wrong place they would be more accepting of leaving it in tact and hypenated, due to Dad's name holding first position. (And numerologically, the kid would do better as an adult as Dad's name-influence would be more business-like, with mine first the emphasis would fall into an artsy kind of influence). But, Dad thought mine should go first because if we followed English tradition (which both of us have in hertiages) my name had more social standing in the area we lived in at the time.

We put said name on birth certificate, got a snippy letter back stapled to the birth certificate application (the frigging bureaucrats rejected the kid's BC... said in the case of a child born to married parents "... it is assumed the child is legitimate and therefore takes the husband's surname"...). We played mail-tag for a couple months, finally went in for a face-to-face meeting (the lady looked EXACTLY like Lily Tomlin's Ernistine charcter - we had a heck of a time keeping straight faces). She said there was no law against naming our kid in this manner, but she wouldn't allow it... even went so far as to say, "If you were of hispanic origin Ohio would recognize your request without question". We went a tad ballistic. By the time all was said and done we had the ACLU involved and a state senator rushed a bill through that said it was perfectly legal to name a kid ANYTHING provided there was no intent to defraud.]

So maybe the kid IS Susan's and she is following British tradition because her family holds higher social status.

I was thinking Susan was his aunt. I left his parents unnamed.

But Susan could be his mother. She did not nessesarly have to be married to have children (I had 2 before I married).

Hmm... Bakbam and MsCat - good points both ways! And HILARIOUS story about the red-tape of naming your kid. I almost was named Mickey (after the diner across the street from the hospital) because in those days you couldn't leave without having named the kid.

Here's a hypothetical, though (just for fun; last names abbreviated to letters):
Mom A and Dad B have a son, Son A-B
He marries Mom C and Dad D's daughter, Daughter C-D.
Now the have a kid: son A-B-C-D

If hyphenations continue to increase exponentially...

Hope I didn't offend anyone! Just trying to get the family trees in my mind.

Agrippa -
We went through that thought process, too. Took it to the "N-th" degree, laughing about loading a kid up with the entire alphabet... But, it still holds to name the offspring with the family/place names of highest status and just drop the lesser ones as the hispanic and British folks do. [At a moment of extreme sillyness we even tried to spell out obscene words in the initials...] smile.gif

I know I'm straying from the topic here, but all of us kids in my family have five names. (Except for the eldest, who has only three. let's all weep for him, being nomen deprived) It started with my eldest sister, when my parents had an argument. My mother was sure that it wasn't legal to give a child more than three names. My father, ever the Yanky, insisted that "This is America. I can name my kid whatever I please!" So, to prove it, they landed her with five names, and it worked. Then, of course, they had to give the rest of us five names, too, to prevent jealousy. At least they SAY that's why. I think they get some sort of odd pleasure of yelling 33 names to get seven kids to come down for breakfast. I think that must be why I have such trouble remembering people's names, I have 33 to remember just for my siblings, add 6 to that for my parents, and you get 39. 39 names for just my very emidiate family. No wonder my brain won't accept anymore! Let's just be glad JK didn't do that to HER characters. I meen, imagine fans trying to chant "Write the next Harry James Evans-Potter book!" or something of the like!
