General note to all three of us: are we all writing James consistantly? I feel like he's going through a lot of mood swings depending on who's writing him. Anybody else notice that?
I've noticed it. My intention with James was much like you describe him, agrippa.
He loves his family, but he's very independent. Wanting to be his own person isn't about ambition so much as it's about finding out how he fits in the world and his 'purpose' in life. It's kind of a spiritual thing, I guess. (Not your average 11 year old.) He's very intelligent, with a sarcastic side we haven't really touched on yet. He has Hermione's gift of common sense (which is why I think he will often think of her), and Ginny & Harry's love for quidditch and an appreciation for all the fun that happens around him, in a large family. In a group, he can become friendly and celebrational, but alone we'll often see the contemplative James, a darker James. Now that school is starting, we'll see more about how he deals with things that happen around him and how he interacts with others.
I don't see his curtness with Carson and Allan as a view that he doesn't like his family. I think it had more to do with not wanting to be in the shadow of his family's accomplishments and fame. You can imagine that most strangers he meets immediately see him as part of the Potter/Weasley legacy and are reluctant to recognize him as a separate entity. He's tired of hearing, "Hey, you're Harry Potter's son, aren't you?"
As for calling Finley a "git", there may be more to Finley that we don't know yet. Being Fleur's child (yay for Bill & Fleur!) he may have a bit of the french/veela arrogance in him that is contrary to the usual Weasley easygoing friendliness.
James in particular would be offended and disgusted by a family member who would take advantage of the fame and high regard that comes with being a Weasley and related to Harry Potter. (Am I close here, bakbam?)
I like Allan and Carson so far. Let's see how much we can remove the "Neville" and "Seamus or Dean" that I'm seeing in them right now. I'm interested in seeing how Allan deals with Snape.
