Showing rampant disregard for the Harry Potter fans and the HP movie-viewing base, WB has moved the release date for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from its announced November 21st, 2008, to July 17th, 2009. They did this solely to make more money (see article quoted below).

Boycott ALL Warner Brothers movies and merchandise until and unless they reverse their decision and release HBP this 2008 holiday season. Boycott everything WB until July 25th, or forever, if they insist on the July release date.
HBP is finished and waiting. A spokesperson for WB, Alan Horn, (see article below) had the gall to say that he'd seen it already and it is "fabulous".

WB is only doing this for the money; boycotting EVERYTHING WB will show them they can't treat fans, and everyone else from charities to the whole industry surrounding the premiers, like this in terms they might understand!

While we have new photos from “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” and news about “Deathly Hallows” (see below) to occupy our time, reaction to the news that HBP has been pushed back until next July continues to dominate the press. Today, the LA Times has a new article online that notes the furious reaction by Harry Potter fans (“among the most intense devotees in contemporary pop culture”), and points out that “petitions were circulating, rumors were flying and angry screeds were being posted on Internet sites within minutes of the Thursday announcement.” The fact that fans were upset with the announcement of the new release date was not lost on Warner Bros president Alan Horn. The LA Times included this gem that reads as follows. “Horn acknowledged that the studio would have to pacify fans in the months to come: “We would never do anything to hurt one of the movies or the series. We love our fans.”

On a related note, the rescheduling of the film has impacted other events tied in to the previously scheduled release this fall. The BBC reports that indeed the Royal Performance and UK premiere of the film had been canceled. But he was hopeful a Royal premiere would still go ahead this year.

In the same article, WB’s Alan Horn is also cited as saying “I’ve seen the movie. It is fabulous. We would have been perfectly able to have it out in November.”

Among all the disappointment, there is a bit of bright news for IMAX who announced that “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince would be screening on the day of release, July 17, 2009. Reps for the company also said that “when “Harry Potter” does open next summer, it will appear in close to 100 of its new digital theaters, as opposed to about 40 estimated to be in operation by November. “It’s a better revenue opportunity for us at that point.” IMAX says that, as announced previously, they will also release HBP which will contain parts of the film in 3-D.

I disagree. WB is a commercial company. They don't make movies for fans, they make them for money. (And those movies have to be entertaining enough to make money, not timely enough to make people happy). If they aren't making money, they won't make movies. The only way to support Harry Potter as a movie franchise is to support the company that is willing to make the HP movies. That's not to say that I'm happy they moved the release date. I'm pretty darned annoyed, but in the big scheme of things, I'm still willing to wait to see that movie and still willing to give my money to whichever company makes movies I'm going to enjoy.

A while back there was a little Sci Fi show on Fox, called Firefly. Fox treated it poorly, played shows out of order, preempted it for other events, and basically never gave it a fair shot. It was cancelled and only 14 epsiodes were made. It was such a good show though, that fans from all over the world felt strongly enough about it, and put their money where their mouth was. There were podcast series, letters, events at conventions, charity drives in its' name, and fans spent as much money as possible on all things Firefly, to tell the powers that be that this was a worthy venture. As a result, Universal picked it up and made a feature film called Serenity, the logical continuance of the Firefly story.

Money talks, and even the little fans can be heard when they support a project rather than boycott the company that makes it. Be angry. But, write letters supporting WB for making HP movies and kindly asking them to support fans, rather than letters of angry demands.

I can think of far more important reasons to use activism in anger. Entertainment isn't one of them. laugh.gif
