Fixing a Mistake

Sirius’s eyes devoured the picture once more. There was no mistaking that rat. “He’s at Hogwarts,” he whispered. Sirius suddenly grew aware of his gruff, raspy voice. It had been such a long time. How long, he could only guess, but it was time to break out. His absence was way past due.

Sirius didn’t belong in Azkaban. The only crime he was guilty of ever committing was that of passing on his job of Secret Keeper to Peter Pettigrew. A mistake that had been hovering over him since the night it was made. After all, no mistake ever goes unpunished. At least not this one.

Sirius took a deep breath, inhaling the smell of decaying happiness. The only thought that kept him going, the one scrap of resistance he had, was that he wasn’t guilty. He hadn’t sold James and Lily to Voldemort. And even if no one else believed it, he would never stop believing it himself.

There were plenty of times where he felt like crying over this. Crying to mourn the loss of his friends and to know that the real traitor was still out there without a single regret in his mind. But the tears never came. Everything had been dried out long ago when he first arrived in Azkaban Prison.

For in Azkaban there is no moisture, no warmth, not a single happy thought. The only thing that ever stays with you is your soul. But even that can be taken away when a dementor gets too close. Because under those hideous black cloaks there is nothing more than a greedy, hungry creature that has no feelings. None, but the ones that they devour.

And so it was time to get out. And he would do it tonight. The plan had been a wispy blur in his head. But now it was extremely clear. He would become a dog.

Dementors have no eye sight. They only sense your presence from your thoughts. So all he would have to do would be to morph into his animagus form and slip out when they delivered his dinner. It was so simple, yet so dangerous.

But he had to do it. The Weasleys could be in danger. Hogwarts students could be in danger. And there was also the satisfying thought of revenge.

Sirius folded up the newspaper clipping and slipped it into his pocket. The rattling breath of a dementor sounded from outside of his cell. It was time.

He shut his eyes, took a deep breath, and transformed into Padfoot.

Sirius watched as the dementor’s rotting hand slowly opened his cell door, gritting his teeth at the magnified sound. That was one downside to being a dog, better hearing.

"Now or never," he told himself, quietly slipping between the door and the dementor. He shivered as he passed. There was nothing worse than standing next to a creature that was so completely heartless.

He tried to muffle the pitter-patter of his feet, afraid he would wake someone. The thought of turning back crossed his mind, but he stubbornly pushed it away. He had to put things right. Peter needed to get what he deserved and Sirius longed for one look at his godson. There was a hole in his heart that needed mending and the weight of revenge was on his shoulders.
